While Bramayugam marks the first collaboration between Malayalam megastar Mammootty and director Rahul Sadasivan, who garnered significant acclaim with Bhoothakaalam (2022), the hype surrounding the film can also be attributed to the fact that it is a black-and-white period horror movie.

Elaborating on the decision to create the film in monochromatic palettes, Mammootty explained that while this technique may not hold relevance in today’s age, it serves to emphasise the era in which the film is set. “It unfolds in a period prior to cinema’s invention. The new generation may not have experienced black and white to the same extent in films, and this film is apt for such experimentation. I am not saying we don’t have black and white films anymore,” he noted, citing the 2011 Oscar-winning movie The Artist as an example.

Mammootty further emphasised that the movie doesn’t adhere to traditional hero or villain roles. “There are only characters. They are people who experience all kinds of feelings.”

Responding to a reporter’s observation about his willingness to tackle experimental projects, Mammootty expressed his belief that all cinema is inherently experimental. “It’s just as difficult to captivate audiences with a familiar story as it is to tell a completely new one. Every film is a risk, with the hope that it resonates with viewers. My goal is consistently to explore new avenues and diverge from previous works.”

Regarding enquiries about whether Bramayugam features time loops, director Rahul Sadasivan clarified that it does not. “It’s an experimental movie, yes, but not a time loop.”

During the trailer launch event in Abu Dhabi recently, Mammootty had also requested fans and moviegoers to approach the film with an open mind, avoiding assumptions or conclusions drawn from the trailer.

“I have a request to all of you who are planning to watch the movie. While the trailer may have sparked various ideas, I urge you not to jump to conclusions about the story. I am saying this so that you are not disappointed [that the original narrative is different from your assumptions]. Watch the film without preconceived notions and refrain from anticipating the emotions it is going to elicit in you, as it can affect your viewing experience when the predictions come true.”

Also starring Arjun Ashokan, Sidharth Bharathan, Amalda Liz, and Manikandan R Achari in key roles, Bramayugam is jointly produced by Night Shift Studios and YNOT Studios.. The film will hit the screens on February 15.
