It seems the marketing of Lal Salaam has turned out to be counterproductive for the film. While it was pitched as a project with Rajinikanth in a cameo, the Superstar played a supporting role in the film. Now, the movie is struggling at the box office, and on the fourth day of its release, it has only managed to rake in Rs 1.13 crore.

According to trade website Sacnilk, the film has so far collected Rs 11 crore which is a fraction of the opening day collection of most Rajinikanth’s films. On the opening day of Lal Salaam, the movie collected about Rs 3.55 crore. However, the weekend didn’t help the film and it continued to struggle as the numbers dipped on both Saturday and Sunday. The movie collected only Rs 6.60 crore over the weekend. With the dip on Sunday, any hopes of a comeback have become bleak.

The word-of-mouth reviews and critics have not been in favour of Lal Salaam either. Despite the film’s noble intentions, the makers have missed out on using Rajinikanth’s presence. The movie was criticized for its over usage of cliches. Even Superstar’s character Moideen Bhai didn’t create the necessary impact among the audience. While AR Rahman has received praise for his compositions, it doesn’t make up for the overall lag in the movie.

Rajinikanth will return to the silver screen with the film Vettaiyan, directed by TJ Gnanavel. It brings together Rajini and his long-time friend Amitabh Bachchan. Fahadh Faasil and Rana Daggubati are also part of the film which has music by Anirudh Ravichander.
