The political and ideological allegiance of Rajinikanth is one of the much-debated topics down South. While the actor is a self-proclaimed Hindu devotee, it is unclear whether he supports Hindutva politics. However, he has been criticised for leaning towards such politics. Contrary to this belief, his daughter Aishwarya Rajinikanth, at the audio launch of Laal Salaam, said that her father is not a ‘sanghi’ like everyone thinks. “If he is a Sanghi, he wouldn’t have accepted to be part of Laal Salam,” she said. When asked about her statement, Rajinikanth, at the Chennai airport, said, “She didn’t say Sanghi is a bad word anywhere.”

He added, “Her perspective is that while Appa is someone who is a spiritual person, why are people calling him that? There’s nothing else to it.” He was then asked about Laal Salam, and Rajini said, “It is about religious harmony. It has come out well. You should watch it.”

At the audio launch of Laal Salaam, Aishwarya Rajiniknath said, “I usually stay away from social media, but my team often tells me what’s happening. I used to get angry seeing some posts. We’re human beings too. In recent times, many people call my father a Sanghi. I didn’t know what it meant. I then asked someone what was the meaning of Sanghi and they said that people who support a particular political party are called Sanghi.” Aishwarya then said that Rajinikanth wouldn’t have been part of her film if that was the case.

Over the years, Rajinikanth has been criticised for leaning towards right wing politics. On the other hand, his films like Kaala have been against such ideologies. He has also once said that people are trying to paint him and Thiruvalluvar in saffron and both of them won’t fall for it.

Rajinikanth is currently busy with the shoot of his upcoming film Vettaiyan, directed by TJ Gnanavel of Jai Bhim fame. Also starring Amitabh Bachchan, Fahadh Faasil, Rana Daggubati, Manju Warrier, Ritika Singh, and Dushara, the movie has music by Anirudh Ravichander. It is expected to be released this year. Rajini will next join the sets of Thalaivar 171, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj.
