Academy Award-nominated actor Dev Patel’s debut directorial venture, Monkey Man, has been generating buzz ever since it was initially announced in 2018. Now, its official trailer has arrived, heightening anticipation for the film. Monkey Man was initially launched as a Netflix project, but the new trailer reveals that it has been taken over by producer Jordan Peele, and will be released theatrically by Universal.

The trailer opens with a glimpse inside a crowded room, where many youngsters are shown sleeping in close quarters. Accompanied by the rhythmic beats of a tabla, the face of the central character (played by Dev himself) appears. “Close your eyes and you will find yourself,” a voice tells a visibly disturbed Dev.

As it progresses, the trailer delves into the protagonist’s deep connection with his mother. “When I was a boy, my mother used to tell me a story of a demon king and his army. They brought fire and terror to the land until they faced the protector of the people; The White Monkey,” he recollects as the trailer highlights the challenges he faces in daily life, including his various jobs at a hotel and a strip club.

Amidst glimpses of his struggles, the trailer showcases Dev Patel’s character in a wrestling ring, donning a gorilla mask, as he trains himself to take on the villains, played by Makarand Deshpande and Sikandar Kher. “In this city, the rich don’t see us as people,” he attests, as the tone of the movie becomes clear and emphasises that the battle is between the elite and the oppressed.

But as the trailer moves forward, we get to see Dev reaching the tipping point and deciding to “protect the weak.” Accompanied to Punjabi-MC’s iconic track, he takes matters into his own hands and hops onto his chariot, an auto-rickshaw named Nicki, as in Minaj.

Patel stars in the movie as “an anonymous young man who ekes out a meagre living in an underground fight club where, night after night, wearing a gorilla mask, he is beaten bloody by more popular fighters for cash,” according to Variety. The film is inspired by the legend of Hanuman. “After years of suppressed rage, Kid discovers a way to infiltrate the enclave of the city’s sinister elite. As his childhood trauma boils over, his mysteriously scarred hands unleash an explosive campaign of retribution to settle the score with the men who took everything from him,” the description continues.

With a blend of Hollywood-style action and Indian aesthetics, Monkey Man also stars Sharlto Copley, Pitobash, Vipin Sharma, and Sobhita Dhulipala in key roles. Monkey Man will hit the screens worldwide on April 5, 2024.
