A day after his daughter, the National Award-winning playback singer and composer Bhavatharini passed away, legendary music director Ilaiyaraaja paid tribute to her on social media by sharing an old photo of them together.

In the black-and-white picture, Ilaiyaraaja, dressed in a white kurta and sporting headphones, can be seen showing a photo album to his toddler daughter, as the two smile happily. “Dear daughter,” the heartfelt caption accompanying the photo reads.

Sister to composers Yuvan Shankar Raja and Karthik Raja, Bhavatharini reportedly succumbed to liver cancer while undergoing treatment in Sri Lanka. She was 47.

Bhavatharini had been unwell for the past five months and travelled to Sri Lanka to undergo Ayurveda treatment, where she passed away at 5.30 pm on Thursday, as reported by Sun News. Her mortal remains were brought back to Chennai on Friday.

Bhavatharini’s body was kept at Ilaiyaraaja’s T Nagar residence, allowing members of the film industry and fans to pay their final respects. Among those who paid their respects were Sports Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, former AIADMK minister D Jayakumar and DMDK general secretary Premalatha Vijayakanth, as reported by The Hindu.

Numerous Tamil cinema icons and celebrities, including actors Kamal Haasan, R Sarath Kumar, Silambarasan, Simran, Soori, and Gautham Karthik, director Selvaraghavan, and composers D Imman and Santhosh Narayanan, took to social media to express their grief over Bhavatharini’s demise.

The mortal remains of Bhavatharini will arrive in Gudalur for the final rites shortly, as reported by the news agency ANI. Bhavatharini received the National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer for the song “Mayil Pola Ponnu Onnu” from the film Bharathi, which was composed by Ilaiyaraaja himself. The singer is survived by her husband R Sabariraj.
