As already announced, HanuMan director Prasanth Varma’s next venture, titled Jai Hanuman, will be a part of his eponymous cinematic universe and the film is already in the works. Now, the filmmaker has opened up about his plans for the cinematic universe and how he intends on expanding it.

In a recent chat with Siddharth Kannan, he revealed that his next movie Adhira will have the central character getting powers from Lord Indra. “Then, we will also have a female-centric superhero film which is very interesting and inspiring. I think that film will become an iconic one for the women of India. They will connect with this film and will want to wear the clothes (the superhero is wearing). And then there is Jai Hanuman which will be a sequel to HanuMan.

Mentioning that he has been receiving “unlimited budget” offers for Jai Hanuman, Varma stressed that he does not want to spend a mammoth amount, like Rs 1,000 crore, just for the sake of it, though the film demands a very high budget. “It could be the biggest film of India. But we don’t want to waste the budget on remuneration and other stuff like that. We already have the script and storyboard ready. So, we will do it one shot at a time and see where it goes budget-wise. But it’s not like I am mentally prepared to make this film with Rs 1,000 crore. That’s not the intention. We will spend only what is required for the film and the story,” he noted.

In another recent interview, Varma had addressed his reputation for overshooting his budgets. He also emphasised that he was very economical with his work process and that he doesn’t shoot unnecessary footage.

Stating that HanuMan was made at a budget of Rs 40 crore, minus advertising and marketing, Varma quipped that it became a joke among his team when everybody started praising him for delivering such a major hit on such a small budget because they know what a spendthrift he was. “I always overshot my films. Now everybody is saying that I am a filmmaker who makes film in small budgets, but actually, I’m infamous for increasing the budgets of my films,” he said.

“Whenever I meet a producer, I tell him, ‘No matter how much I try, the budget will keep increasing because I keep coming up with new ideas.’ But I will tell them first. If you think that the idea is worth putting more money into, give me the money, I’ll shoot the scene. But if you think you can’t give more, I’ll still shoot the scene. But I improvise a lot, while shooting, while writing, while editing, during dubbing,” he added.

Starring Teja Sajja in the lead role, HanuMan also featured Amritha Aiyer, Varalaxmi Sarathkumar, Vinay Rai and Raj Deepak Shetty. The film was bankrolled by Kandagatla Niranjan Reddy under the banner of Primeshow Entertainment.
