The Hrithik Roshan and Deepika Padukone-starrer Fighter was released in theatres on January 25, a day ahead of the Republic Day holiday, to strong if not spectacular box office response. According to industry tracker Sacnilk, Fighter collected Rs 22 crore on the first day of release. The aerial action film, which is helmed by Siddharth Anand, had an overall 21.17 percent Hindi occupancy on Thursday. Chennai recorded the highest occupancy for Hindi language release, with 59 percent, followed by cities such as Hyderabad, Mumbai, NCR and Jaipur.

Fighter collected more than Hrithik’s last movie, Vikram Vedha, on its opening day. However, it couldn’t beat his 2019 blockbuster War’s first-day box office. The action film, which was a part of YRF’s spy universe and also directed by Siddharth Anand, made an impressive Rs 53.35 crore on its opening day. In the same year as War, Hrithik also starred in Super 30 which opened with Rs 11 crore and went on to collect Rs 210 crore worldwide.

Fighter marks Hrithik’s fifth-highest opening. War is followed by Bang Bang! at Rs 27 crore, Krrish 3 at Rs 25 crore, and Agneepath at Rs 22.8 crore. Siddharth’s previous movie was Pathaan with Shah Rukh Khan. In January last year, SRK’s comeback film made Rs 57 crore on opening day. Later in the year, YRF released Salman Khan’s Tiger 3 on Diwali and the film earned Rs 53 crore on the first day.

According to Sacnilk, Fighter has already sold tickets amounting to Rs 13.2 crore in advance sales for the second day (Republic Day). This shows a steady increase, considering that on the opening day, Fighter sold more than 2.79 lakh tickets, totaling around Rs 8.4 crore in India.

Since Fighter premiered on a regular workday, the box office numbers may have been impacted. However, with positive reviews spreading, it’s expected to perform much better on its second day, especially as it aligns with the Republic Day holiday. Fighter also stars Anil Kapoor, Karan Singh Grover, Sanjeeda Sheikh, Rishabh Sawhney and Akshay Oberoi among others in pivotal roles.
