Actor Tom Hollander, known for his roles in television and in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, recalled a humorous anecdote about being mistaken ‘in non-visual’ scenarios with the more popular Spider-Man star Tom Holland. Appearing on Late Night with Seth Meyers recently, the British actor revealed that he once got sent a payment intended for Holland by mistake, and was stunned to see just how large the amount was.
Hollander said that he’d just done a BBC show for around £30,000, and was hoping that it would last him the year. “I was thinking ‘well this is marvellous, I’m very prosperous’ …” But he was in for the shock of his life while watching a friend’s play. The friend, he said, was making around £300 per week. “And I’m going to go afterwards and see him and slightly patronise him and say how wonderful it was. And then the interval came and I thought I’d check my emails,” he said.

When he checked his emails, he noticed a message intended for Holland, who’d just received the first tranche in box office bonuses for an Avengers movie. “It was an astonishing amount of money,” Hollander said. “It was not his salary. It was his first box office bonus. Not the whole box office bonus, the first one. And it was more money than I’d ever (seen). It was a seven-figure sum.” Hollander said that his ‘feeling of smugness’ disappeared.
Stars of the Marvel Cinematic Universe are among the highest-paid actors in the world. The original six actors – Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner, Mark Ruffalo and Scarlett Johansson – reportedly received upfront salaries between $15 million (approximately Rs 124 crore) for Renner and Ruffalo, and $20 million (approximately Rs 166 crore) for Downey for Avengers: Endgame, not counting the millions more that the probably made in bonuses. Endgame is the second-biggest film of all time, with $2.8 billion worldwide.
After the success of the first two Spider-Man movies, a Variety report pegged Holland’s salary for studio movies as anywhere between $5 million and $10 million, not counting bonuses. This figure, the report said, could increase to $20 million for streaming projects where everything is usually lumped into one sum. Holland’s last outing as Spider-Man, Spider-Man: No Way Home, grossed $1.9 billion worldwide. He announced a break from acting after starring in the Apple TV+ series The Crowded Room.
