The nominations for the 96th Academy Awards were announced on Tuesday evening (IST) and as it was expected, the nomination line-up was dominated by Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer with 13 nominations and Martin Scorsese’s Killer of the Flower Moon getting 10 nominations. Poor Things, directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, got 11 nominations. While most of the nominations did not shock the viewers, there were a few snubs and surprises at the Oscar Nominations 2024.
Here are the biggest snubs and surprises from the 96th Academy Awards nominations:
SNUB: Leonardo DiCaprio, Killers of the Flower Moon
Scorsese’s three-and-a-half hour epic was loved by his fans and voters in the Academy as well as the film managed to score 10 nominations. Robert De Niro scored a nomination in the Best Actor in a Supporting Role category and Lily Gladstone scored a nomination in the Best Actress in a Leading Role category. However, Leonardo DiCaprio, who played the lead role in the film, did not get nominated. Leo has been nominated six times at the Oscars but has managed to win it only once, for 2016’s The Revenant.
Leonardo DiCaprio did not get a nomination for Killers of the Flower Moon.
SURPRISE: America Ferrera, Barbie
In what seemed like the biggest surprise of the evening, America Ferrera landed a nomination in the Best Actress in a Supporting Role category for her work in Barbie. While Barbie was expected to get nominated in many categories, America’s name was not heavily discussed when it came to the film’s acting nominations. In the run up to the award season, America was not nominated at any major awards except for the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards.

SNUB: Margot Robbie, Barbie
Margot Robbie, who shouldered the billion dollar movie Barbie on her shoulders, and also produced it, did not land a nomination in the Best Actress category. Margot was nominated at the Golden Globes and BAFTAs but did not win the award at any of the major award functions. Margot has previously been nominated twice in acting categories at the Academy Awards. She is nominated as the producer of Barbie as the film is nominated for Best Picture.
Margot Robbie did not get a nomination for Barbie.
SURPRISE: Annette Bening and Jodie Foster, Nyad
Directed by Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin, Nyad released on Netflix and had been generating positive buzz before the Oscar nominations but nods for both its leading women came as a surprise. Annette Bening scored a nomination in the Best Actress in a Leading Role category and Jodie Foster scored a nomination in the Best Actress in a Supporting Role category.
SNUB: Dominic Sessa, The Holdovers
The Holdovers was a glorious debut for actor Dominic Sessa. The Alexander Payne film managed to score nominations in five categories. Da’Vine Joy Randolph scored a nomination in the Best Actress in a Supporting Role category and Paul Giamatti scored a nomination in the Best Actor in a Leading Role category but the third actor of the film, Dominic, was completely snubbed here.
SURPRISE: Colman Domingo, Rustin
Colman was seen in two Oscar hopefuls his year – Rustin and The Color Purple. And while the actor scored nominations at the BAFTAs, Golden Globes and the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards, his nomination at the Oscars comes as a surprise.
SNUB: Greta Gerwig, Barbie
Greta Gerwig’s Barbie became the biggest box office film in Hollywood this year and managed to surpass Nolan’s Oppenheimer in many parts of the world. While the film has received nominations in nine categories, Greta’s name was omitted from the Best Directors category which might come as a shock to many of the film’s fans.
Director Celine Song and actor Greta Lee did not get nominations at the Oscars.
SNUB: Greta Lee (actor), Celine Song (director) Past Lives
Greta Lee surprised everyone with her performance in Past Lives this year. Despite being nominated at the BAFTAs and Golden Globes, Greta did not land a nomination at the Oscars. Celine Song, who was also expected to land a nomination in the Best Director category, was also snubbed at Oscar nominations.
