Although nearly 17 years have passed since its release, Anwar Rasheed’s action comedy Chotta Mumbai remains a favourite among moviegoers in Kerala and Mohanlal fans alike. From the Malayalam superstar’s lead character named Vasco da Gama, aka Thala, and his gang of sketchy and goofy small-time rowdies to the dialogues and songs, almost every aspect of Chotta Mumbai has ingrained itself in Malayalam pop culture.

In fact, the film’s popularity extends across age groups, with even those who were just toddlers when Chotta Mumbai hit the screens in 2007 continuing to celebrate it. And, recent scenes from a film festival at a college in Thiruvananthapuram highlight this enduring affection.

On January 21, Chotta Mumbai was screened at Tagore Theatre, Vazhuthacadu, in Kerala’s capital city as part of a film festival organised by students of Mar Ivanios College. Now, videos from the event have emerged depicting students joyfully celebrating each scene and song from the film, emphasising its lasting impact on cinema enthusiasts in the state.

While in one video, students are seen dancing energetically to the tune of the song “Vasco da Gama” alongside the on-screen Mohanlal, creating a lively atmosphere in a packed Tagore Theatre, another video captures their excitement as they cheer during the introduction scene of the Malayalam superstar.

Chotta Mumbai marked Anwar Rasheed’s second directorial venture after the blockbuster Mammootty-starrer Rajamanikyam. Set in Kochi, this action comedy features a talented ensemble cast, including Kalabhavan Mani, Siddique, Jagathy Sreekumar, Indrajith Sukumaran, Bhavana, Sai Kumar, Rajan P. Dev, Vinayakan, Manikuttan and Bijukuttan, each contributing effortlessly to elevate the exuberance of the movie.

Mohanlal will be next seen in Lijo Jose Pellissery’s period fantasy film Malaikottai Vaaliban which is set to hit the screens on January 25.
