Bollywood actor Pankaj Tripathi took on the challenge of portraying former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in the recently released biopic Main Atal Hoon. Despite being a beloved star, Pankaj’s depiction of Vajpayee raised skepticism when the film’s trailer was unveiled, and the same hesitancy was evident in the film’s opening day box office numbers.

Main Atal Hoon had a lackluster start, earning Rs 1.15 crore on Friday. Fortunately, with the weekend in full swing, the film experienced an uptick, garnering Rs 2.1 crore on Saturday. The momentum continued on Sunday, with an estimated collection of Rs 2.40 crore. This would bring the film’s total domestic earnings to Rs 5.65 crore. The film recorded an overall 15.81 percent Hindi occupancy on Sunday.

Directed by National Award-winning filmmaker Ravi Jadhav, Main Atal Hoon is co-written by Jadhav and Rishi Virmani. The film’s cast includes Pankaj Tripathi, Piyush Mishra, Raja Rameshkumar Sevak, Daya Shankar Pandey, Payal Nair, Paula McGlynn, and Gauri Sukhtankar in pivotal roles.

Despite Pankaj Tripathi’s commendable performance, the film has received mixed reviews from critics. The Indian Express’ film critic Shubhra Gupta gave it 2 stars. In her review, she remarked, “Pankaj Tripathi, In and As Atal Bihari Vajpayee, was born to play this part. His command over Hindi, and the rhythms of his speech are so hypnotic that we get swept away, but even an actor of Tripathi’s calibre can’t do much with such a reductive script. What we could have got is a rounded portrait of a budding neta who was instrumental in shaping the early Jan Sangh, the formation of the short-lived Janata Party, and the birth of the current BJP.”
