Sally Field described her “traumatic” illegal abortion after feeling “so hesitant” to share her story.
The actress described the “horrific” abortion in an Instagram video Sunday, noting that she still “feel[s] very shamed about it.”
Field was a 17-year-old high school graduate when she got pregnant without “a lot of family support or finances.”

She recalled, “We had a family doctor who was a friend of the family, and he drove me, his wife and my mother in their brand-new Cadillac to Tijuana.”
After crossing the border into Mexico, the group “parked on a really scroungy-looking street” three blocks from where Field, now 77, would undergo the procedure.
“[The doctor] gave me an envelope with cash, and I was to walk into that building and give them the cash and then come right back to him,” she said. “I guess he thought if I were dying then maybe he could help me.”

Field had “no anesthetic” during the “beyond hideous and life-altering” abortion and “felt everything” while only her arms and legs were “weird and numb” from “a few puffs of ether.”
“Then the situation turned darker,” the Oscar winner continued, going on to explain “that the technician was actually molesting” her.
“I had to figure out, how can I make my arms move to push him away?” she recalled. “So it was just this absolute pit of shame. … When it was finished, they said, ‘Go, go, go, go, go!’ like the building was on fire.”
Field urged listeners to vote for Kamala Harris in the upcoming presidential election instead of Donald Trump since “we can’t go back.”
She said, “These are the things that women are going through now. … And it’s beyond, how you can go back to that and do that to our little girls and our young women and not have respect and regard for their health and their own decisions.”
The “Mrs. Doubtfire” star concluded by sarcastically saying, “And that was that lovely story.”
Field’s followers praised her in the comments section, with Busy Philipps and other A-listers thanking the Golden Globe winner for her honesty.
When Harris became the Democractic nominee in August, Field returned to Instagram for the first time in years and wrote, “I’ve not been on social media. Not since it became public toilet paper for our former crook of a President. But ‘hope is making a comeback.’ So here I am.”
