Following the tremendous success of Jailer (2023), “Superstar” Rajinikanth is gearing up for the release of his latest action drama Vettaiyan. Helmed by TJ Gnanavel, known for Jai Bhim, the film is produced by Subaskaran’s Lyca Productions. Recently, Rajinikanth opened up about his first meeting with Gnanavel and how he encouraged the director to adapt his story into a commercial film.
At the audio launch of Vettaiyan in Chennai recently, Rajinikanth revealed that it was his daughter Soundarya who recommended that he hear Gnanavel’s story, which she liked a lot. The “Superstar” mentioned that although he had watched Jai Bhim and admired it, he had never interacted with Gnanavel before that. “He narrated the story to me, and I liked it… very nice. However, since a lot of money would go into making the movie, I asked if he could adjust it to make it more commercial. I told him that if he brought back the story after adding commercial elements, I would think about it,” Rajinikanth recalled.

He added, “Gnanavel asked me for 10 days but called me in two. He said, ‘Sir, I will do this commercially… but don’t expect it to be a film like what directors like Nelson Dilipkumar and Lokesh Kanagaraj do. I will present you just like they do — impressing the fans — but in my own way and style.’ I replied, ‘Sir, that’s what I want; otherwise, I would have gone to Nelson or Lokesh.’ He returned in 10 days and narrated the updated story to me, and I was shocked and impressed.”
While Vettaiyan’s cinematography is handled by SR Kathir, it has been edited by Philomin Raj and music composed by Anirudh Ravichander.

During the event, Rajinikanth also stated that TJ Gnanavel himself insisted on having Anirudh Ravichander as the composer. When Gnanavel stated, “Sir, 100%, I want Anirudh for this movie,” Rajinikanth replied, “For you, it’s 100%; for me, it’s a 1000% wish to have Anirudh.”
Also starring Amitabh Bachchan, Fahadh Faasil, Rana Daggubati, Manju Warrier, Ritika Singh and Dushara Vijayan, Vettaiyan will hit the screens on Thursday.
