British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s chief of staff Sue Gray resigned on Sunday, citing concerns that increasing media coverage about her position was “at risk of becoming a distraction to the government”. Gray’s departure follows recent reports about tensions between her and Starmer’s chief adviser, Morgan McSweeney, and revelations that she was earning more than the prime minister. The BBC reported that Gray’s annual salary was £170,000, approximately £3,000 more than Starmer’s.

Gray announced she would be taking up a new role as Starmer’s envoy for the regions and nations. McSweeney is set to replace her as chief of staff at Downing Street.

“Public service has always been my top priority throughout my career,” Gray said in a statement. “However, in recent weeks it has become clear that the intense focus on my position risked distracting from the government’s vital work of bringing change,” she added.

Gray, a former senior civil servant, became well-known in 2022 when she led investigations into the “Partygate” scandal — allegations that former Conservative Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his staff held parties on government premises, despite strict Covid-19 lockdown restrictions. Her findings contributed to Johnson’s downfall, culminating in his resignation last year.

Gray left the civil service last year before joining Labour as Starmer’s chief of staff.

Downing Street also announced further operational changes, including the establishment of a new strategic communications team.

Starmer, who became Britain’s first Labour prime minister in 14 years after winning a landslide election in July, has recently faced criticism over Gray’s salary and negative reports regarding gifts, such as clothing and eyeglasses, he and his wife accepted. Starmer has denied any wrongdoing.
