Opening up always helps, even if it’s in front of a fictional cop. Actor Shivaji Satam, best known as ACP Pradyuman on the CID, recalled how Sanjay Dutt had expressed his frustration of being accused in the 1993 Mumbai blast case. Shivaji said the actor would shoot a film well past midnight, after dealing with court hearings in the day. Dutt was cleared of the charges related to his involvement in the bombings but the TADA court sentenced him to six years’ imprisonment under Arms act for illegal possession of weapons in 2007.

During a chat with Friday Talkies, Shivaji Satam recalled filming a movie in which Sanjay Dutt had a cameo appearance. “Sanju had to attend court every time during that film. I played a father to a daughter, whose dying wish was to see Sanjay Dutt once. He would come on set to shoot the scene at 2 in the night, after finishing his court hearings during the day. Then we did Vaastav. Sanju is innocent, he had no air of being a star even then,” the actor recalled.

Shivaji Satam recalled how during the filming of Vaastav, which is regarded as a landmark film in his career, Dutt told him how he felt helpless with the situation as the bag of weapons was planted.

“He is actually very vulnerable. Even then I remember he would tell me, ‘Shiva ab kya kare yaar, ye bag aaya, main phass gaya.’ I would tell him, ‘Baba kuch nahi hoga, tu aise he rehna.’ We did four-five films with him. He is a wonderful, big-hearted person.”

The actor revealed how Sanjay Dutt once called a few of his friends at his place as he was going to cook mutton. The star was using latest cell phone of the time– it was small and a slick device, which impressed Shivaji. “So, I complimented him for it. Later when the lunch was over, he removed his sim card and handed me the device. ‘Please keep it, I have one more, you use this one now,'” he recalled.
