If one were to put his success on one side of a weighing scale and his struggles on the other, actor Govinda says the one with all the hardships will be heavier. The actor, who was one of the topmost stars of the 90s, said he saw struggles ever since he was born as his family wasn’t in a good financial position.

Govinda’s father was actor Aroon, while his mother was singer-actress Nirmala Devi. In a throwback interview with Simi Grewal, Govinda said his father had acted in nearly 40 films and then went on to turn producer, making a film which changed the course of the family, bringing them from a fancy bungalow in Bandra to a small house in Virar— outskirts of Mumbai.

“He had made a film which didn’t work and he lost a lot of money. We had a bungalow at Carter Road, but after the film flopped, we had to move to Virar. That’s when the hard times began, and I was born. With failure, he was really shaken and he couldn’t take it and the entire family faced that difficulty,” Govinda said.

The actor revealed how he became a commerce graduate, who would visit offices for work. He even applied at Taj hotels, but didn’t get the job because he couldn’t speak English. Films were not on his mind, but there was one solid motivation: To relieve his mother of all her struggles and give her a better life.

When Simi noted how he had said that it was his “anger at seeing the struggle of my mother that made me a star,” Govinda nodded and said, “When you see your mother struggling to get through a bad patch in life, struggling very hard… She was coping with everything. I have seen her struggle through everything and I wanted to change it very fast.”

Govinda’s mother passed away in 1996, while his father died in 1998. Both of them witnessed his staggering rise in the movies, which continued till the end of the 90s decade. The actor is currently back home from hospital after he was admitted due to an accidental gunshot wound on Tuesday.
