When Shinchan started airing in India in 2006, kids were completely taken by the Japanese animated series. Millions of children across the country would wait for their daily scheduled episode but what made Shinchan especially popular was its Hindi dubbed voice and the eventual controversy that the show created because of its objectionable dialogues. In a recent interview, Shinchan’s voice artiste Aakash Ahuja recalled the days when he would dub for the animated series as a 10-year-old and said that he saw the uncensored and “lewd” version of the show that would later be censored for Indian audiences.
Talking to the YouTube channel The Motor Mouth, Aakash said that he was dubbing for Shinchan when the show got banned in India. Shinchan was actually a Japanese animated series which was targeted for adults but in India, it was shown to kids. After the show got banned, it got even more publicity. “I have seen Shinchan dancing naked and I have dubbed that too. Because they would say that you dub this, then we’ll see. He would sing lines like ‘haathi, mera pyara haathi’ and it was so lewd. Even adults shouldn’t watch it, it was so dirty. They would censor it all later,” he said.
Aakash said that for the ban to get lifted, he had to redub lines of the show so it would be fit to air on television. “There used to be a line on the show ‘Bachhe churane vali moti budhiya,’ that was the line. After the case was filed… by then we had done around 150-200 episodes, I was called and all those lines were changed otherwise Shinchan would never be put on air. We changed all those lines so it could go on TV,” he recalled.

Aakash said that he left dubbing for Shinchan after his tenth standard as he had to focus on higher studies but he also shared that the work was taking a toll on his health. “My voice was also getting into adolescence. The kind of voice I could produce at 10, I couldn’t do it at 15. At one point, there was so much strain that I had to go to an ENT doctor. That doctor said that if you continue, there is a risk of you losing your voice. I would also spend a lot of time with headphones so that could also impact my hearing,” he recalled.
Aakash was the first dubbing artiste for Shinchan when the show started in India. He also dubbed for Nobita and Doraemon.
