Barring any last-minute changes, Tuesday evening’s vice presidential debate between Republican candidate JD Vance and Democrat Tim Walz is likely to be the final showdown between the two tickets in the 2024 race.

Vance, a Senator from Ohio, and Walz, the Governor of Minnesota, both embraced their traditional roles as aggressive defenders of their running mates during the CBS News-hosted debate in New York, according to a report by Associated Press.

While debates between vice presidential candidates are often seen as having little impact, this one could sway voters given the tight polling race. It may also be the last head-to-head confrontation, as there are no further planned debates between Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic nominee for president, and former President Donald Trump, the Republican nominee.

A recent AP-NORC poll shows that Walz is more popular than Vance, presenting an additional challenge for the Republican. Despite claiming he didn’t need extensive preparation for the debate, Vance participated in mock sessions with his wife, Usha, and senior aides, while Rep. Tom Emmer stood in as Walz.

Meanwhile, Walz’s preparation involved hunkering down in a Minneapolis hotel, with Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg playing the role of Vance.

Trump also made headlines during the campaign, criticising President Biden’s hurricane response and making remarks about former President Jimmy Carter on his 100th birthday.

Trump’s campaign has been actively focusing on critical swing states like Wisconsin, urging Republicans to increase turnout in traditionally Democratic areas.
