It is not always that a Tamil-Telugu bilingual clicks at the box-office of both languages. One of the major successes in this sphere was the 2016 Tamil film, Thozha, which was released as Oopiri in Telugu. Directed by Vamshi Paidipally, the film was headlined by Nagarjuna and Karthi. Their camaraderie shone through in the movie, which continues to be loved by the audience eight years after its release. Now, this wonderful friendship has come to the fore again with Nagarjuna praising Karthi’s latest release, Meiyazhagan, which has been dubbed in Telugu as Sathyam Sundaram.

Sharing his thoughts on the C Premkumar directorial, which features Arvind Swamy and Karthi in the lead roles, Nagarjuna said, “Dear brother Karthi, I saw your film Satyam Sundaram last night!! You and Arvind ji were just too too good. I had a smile throughout watching you and went to sleep with the same smile. Brought back so many childhood memories and also memories of our film, Oopiri.” The actor also congratulated the entire team, and pointed out that the movie has been loved by critics and audiences alike.

In response to this warm wish by Nagarjuna, Karthi thanked his ‘annayya’ for his support, and wrote, “”Thank you so much Nagarjuna annayya. We are elated to hear your words and so happy that you enjoyed the film. Your appreciation for good cinema constantly inspires us to strive for excellence.”

In fact, Sathyam Sundaram is said to be doing decent business at the Telugu box-office, and holding its own against the Devara juggernaut. This must have come as a welcome surprise for the makers of Meiyazhagan, who would have been worried about the box-office prospects of the film following actor and Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan taking offence against Karthi’s statement on the Tirupati Laddu controversy. In an event in Hyderabad, Karthi brushed off questions about laddus with a laugh and saying he doesn’t want to comment on a sensitive issue. This irked Kalyan, who went on a tirade against actors making a mockery of the issue. However, the issue was soon resolved with Karthi apologising for ‘unintentionally hurting’ sentiments, and reiterated his devotion to Lord Venkateswara.

Meiyazhagan, which hit the screens on September 27, has been receiving overwhelming praise from critics even as sections of the audience are criticising the movie for its pacing and length. In fact, it is reported that the makers are planning to trim a few minutes from the Tamil version of the film, which runs to almost 3 hours.
