Actor-politician Mithun Chakraborty has been named as the recipient of the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award, which is the highest government honour accorded for contributions in the field of cinema. The three-time National Award winner, who is one of the very few to have won the Best Actor win on debut, is a veteran of over 350 films in Hindi, Bengali, Bhojpuri, Odia, Telugu, and Tamil.
Son Namashi on Mithun’s Dadasaheb Phalke honour
While Mithun is in Kolkata at present, his son Namashi Chakraborty exclusively told indianexpress.com, “Feeling extremely proud and honoured. My father is a self made superstar and a great citizen. His life journey is an inspiration for millions. We are all feeling elated for this magnificent honour.”

Mithun’s filmography
Known for his histrionics, and dance skills, Mithun was a superstar in his own right in the 80s and 90s, and gracefully transitioned into supporting roles over the past few years. Some of his popular films include Disco Dancer, Mrigayaa, Gudia, Guru, and Oh My God.
The veteran actor broke into the collective consciousness of the nation through his turn as a dancing superstar in Disco Dancer (1982), but not before establishing his acting credentials through films like legendary filmmaker Mrinal Sen’s Mrigayaa (1976), Surakshaa (1979), Bimal Dutt’s Kasturi (1980), and Khwaja Ahmad Abbas’ The Naxalites, which was screened at Cannes Film Festival.

Even when starring in films that were more about commercial value than the critical appeal, Mithun added two more National awards to his name through Tahader Katha (1992) and Swami Vivekananda (1996). As much as he was appreciated for his dancing skills, his talent as an action hero too made him an indispensable part of Hindi cinema history. Always trying his best to not be boxed in any category, Mithun tried his hand at multiple genres, including comedy, which he excelled at. His Disco Dancer also won him global appeal in countries like Russia and Kazakhstan. The actor also dabbled in television by hosting popular shows like Grandmaster, Bigg Boss Bangla, Dadagiri, and Dance Indian Dance.
Apart from his exploits in the field of cinema and television, Mithun is also active in the political sphere. After an earlier stint with Trinamool Congress that saw him be nominated to the Rajya Sabha between 2014 and 2016, the veteran is currently affiliated with the Bharatiya Janata Party.
While there were no doubts about his acting skills, Mithun concentrated on films that endeared him to the masses who celebrated his success as an extension of their own. No wonder he was referred to as the common man’s hero. Born as Gouranga Chakraborty in erstwhile Calcutta in 1950, the rise and rise of the superstar fondly called as Mithun da is a journey that has inspired many.

The Minister also shared that the presentation ceremony of the 70th National Awards would happen on October 8 where the legendary actor would be honoured with the other winners.
