Taal, one of the most successful films of Subhash Ghai, completed 25 years of its release on August 13. Now, weeks later, the film is re-releasing in 136 theatres on September 27 as part of its 25th anniversary celebrations. A day ago, Subhash Ghai, AR Rahman, and Anil Kapoor also organised an event to celebrate the occasion and answered several questions around the film’s evergreen songs and plot. During the event, one of the fans asked AR Rahman to reveal his favourite song from the film. While the Oscar-winning composer was answering the question, Ghai quickly shared a very interesting anecdote, which made the crowd laugh.

Replying to his fan, Rahman said, “Its hard to tell.” He further confessed, he had not watched the film after it released. “I watched it only a couple of years ago because we were thinking of a sequel. But nothing is confirmed.” Answering his fan’s question, Rahman continued, “My favourite actually, when I think about it, its Kavita Ji’s song–Ishq Bina.” He revealed, “We recorded almost some 15-16 minutes of the song and then edited it because I was trying to get her in a zone where she has never done that before–the vocal improvisation. Usually, I don’t cut when people sing. I keep going.”

Subhash Ghai quickly added, “I second it.” He explained, “Rahman normally records from 9 pm to 6 am. We spent 70 nights to compose the music of Taal. I remember when Kavita ji came for the recording. She was supposed to sing an antara and a mukhda. We thought it will be completed in maximum 45 minutes to 1 hour. There I realised one thing about Rahman’s technique and way of working. He kept on recording and told her ‘You carry on. Once more.’ Eventually, he told her, ‘You carry on singing till you feel fed up.’ He played the rhythm on loop and she kept singing for hours.”

Rahman interrupted and justified his technique. He said, “Sometimes it happens because we have the original version of Ishq Bina and this version is supposed to be emotional. And my idea is like, the composition happens live.” He explained, “When the composition happens, there is a mic and then there is a keyboard, so I mislead them with different notes. Otherwise, it gets boring. During this, sometimes we find a very beautiful spot or another scale. Sometimes the magic happens, sometimes it doesn’t.”

Taal, upon its release reached the top 20 on Variety’s box office list. The soundtrack of the film became a major critical and commercial success. The musical drama, starring Aishwarya Rai, Anil Kapoor, and Akshaye Khanna had 12 songs including Ishq Bina, Taal, and Ramta Jogi, among others.
