Actor Govinda’s wife, Sunita Ahuja, spoke about the restrictions that she had to encounter after their marriage, and the cultural differences that she had to navigate, seeing as she was born and brought up in a more affluent neighbourhood of Mumbai than him. “I used to stay in Pali Hill, and he was from Virar,” she said. Scrunching up her face, she implied that she looked down on people from Virar, and said that she had no idea that she would fall in love with Govinda and eventually marry him.

Appearing on the Time Out with Ankit podcast, she said that she tied the knot with Govinda when she was 18, and their daughter was born only a year later. “I went from wearing miniskirts to sarees. That’s why my husband used to hate me. I would tell him, ‘I’m from Bandra, you’re from Virar, boss’. And he’d say, ‘No, my mother won’t like it’.” When Sunita pointed out that the women he stars with in his films often wear short clothes, Govinda said that he’s fine with that, but wouldn’t be okay with his wife dressing the same way.

Reflecting on her relationship with Govinda, she said, “If there’s anyone other than his mother that he loves, it’s me. I’ve been with him since before he was a megastar. I’ve been with him through thick and thin, through good days and bad. There must be a reason we’ve stayed together for 40 years, otherwise when do you hear of relationships that last this long these days?”

She said that she was very young when they got married, and almost immediately became busy with her children. Govinda, meanwhile, didn’t slow down when it came to his professional commitments. “When our daughter was born, he’d scheduled five shifts on that same day. My mother-in-law was there with me, and after every shift, he’d check in and ask if the baby had been born. When he was at his third shift of the day, Tina was born. I didn’t realise how big a star he was,” she said, adding that for the first year, they kept their marriage a secret.

“There was a belief back then that a hero’s stardom can get damaged if he goes off the market,” she explained. “This was the trend in those days, who cares? But when Tina was born, of course everybody came to know.” Govinda and Sunita tied the knot in 1987; they have two children, daughter Tina and son Yashvardhan.
