Zeenat Aman, known for her bold personality, was a fashion icon of the 70s and 80s, setting trends with her unconventional style. She also broke many barriers with her sensual portrayal of Rupa in Raj Kapoor’s Satyam Shivam Sundaram in 1978. In a recent Instagram post, the veteran actor reminisced about the late costume designer and India’s first Academy Award winner, Bhanu Athaiya, who was instrumental in crafting her iconic look in the film.

Sharing a photo of herself in haute couture, Zeenat fondly remembered Bhanu and their collaboration on over 15 films. She wrote, “I’ve been blessed by the hand of many a genius in my life. The very best in not just cinema, but also fashion. The formidably talented Bhanu Athaiya, India’s first Academy award winner, designed my costumes for over 15 movies including Satyam Shivam Sundaram.” Bhanu Athaiya was the first Indian to win Academy Award for Best Costume Design for Ben Kingsley’s Gandhi.

In the post, Zeenat revealed that due to their frequent collaborations, Bhanu had a mannequin made to Zeenat’s measurements, allowing her to design outfits freely without needing Zeenat for frequent fittings. “She was prolific and meticulous, and soon after our first partnership had a mannequin made to my measurements. It would stand in her studio, and on this inanimate bust she would actualise the fantastical ideas that appeared in her mind. I only had to pop in very occasionally for trials, an arrangement that was most suitable to my schedule,” she wrote.

Zeenat also mentioned that while many designers have crafted clothes for her, none came close to Bhanu’s skill in creating outfits that were both sensual and comfortable. “No other designer in my life has come close to creating outfits for me that were as comfortable as they were sensual,” she wrote. The Heera Panna star further shared that she prefers to dress casually and, despite receiving haute couture from friends, those clothes often remain at the bottom of her wardrobe.

On the professional front, Zeenat will next be seen in Bun Tikki, directed by Faraz Arif Ansari. The film also features Abhay Deol, Shabana Azmi, and Lin Laishram in pivotal roles.
