Soon after Stree 2 opened to a whopping Rs 60 crore upon its release in India, fans of stars Shraddha Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao began feuding among each other over who should be given more credit for the film’s success. Amid this, a statement by cast member Aparshakti Khurana grabbed attention. In an interview with Zoom, the actor was asked about the credit war, to which he replied, “If I comment on this, it will go far.” Talking about Shraddha Kapoor getting credit for the film, the actor called it a “PR Game.” This fueled the controversy, with his co-star Abhishek Banerjee, and now Amar Kaushik, weighing in with their opinions.

In a new interview with Zoom, Amar Kaushik opened up about the credit war and also revealed that he spoke to Aparshakti about his comment. Talking about the credit war, he said, “We video-called each other when the controversy around the credits sparked online. We simply laughed about it.” Sharing that his bond with the film’s cast is strong, the director said, “We are extremely close. Even when something goes wrong, we say it to each other to their face. There is no formality between us. It is completely fan-created controversy. When a film does well, the fans think it is because of their favourite star. This is good for our film’s business. Because of the controversy, more people are watching this film.”

He further revealed, “I even called Aparshakti after his statement. I asked him, ‘What was that?’ He said, ‘Paaji, I didn’t mean anything by it. You know me how I talk.’ He then said, ‘I always laugh when I say such things, this time, I just forgot to laugh and it became serious.’ Then, I was like, ‘But, what did you mean? What were you trying to say?’ He said, ‘I was just talking and the way she was asking questions, I just didn’t laugh.’ Aparshakti is very good at heart. When he is bothered about something, he will simply blurt it out. He won’t bottle it up. He was like, ‘I am just caught between the fan war’.”

Talking about the film’s success, Amar Kaushik pointed out that it’s not just the stars who deserve credit, but several others who work behind the camera. He said, “There are more people associated with the project apart from the actors. There are DOPs, sound designer, music director. It is also Dinesh Vijan’s marketing and the film’s music that made the project bigger and better.” The director then joked, “Please continue the credit war until the film reaches Rs 1000 crore at the box office.”

Recently, Abhishek Banerjee also addressed the Stree 2 credit war controversy. He told PTI, “We are very secure actors. And even if we are insecure, we say everything out loud. Like, I would do that a lot on song shoots and say, I want to be centre frame just to irritate my co-stars.”

Stree 2, released on August 15, has earned Rs 725 crore globally, according to Sacnilk. The fifth instalment of Dinesh Vijan’s horror comedy universe also stars Pankaj Tripathi in a supporting role, alongside cameos by Akshay Kumar and Tamannaah Bhatia.
