‘Thalapathy’ Vijay’s much-anticipated film The Greatest of All Time aka GOAT, which hit theatres on Thursday, is poised to shatter multiple box office records in Tamil Nadu. According to early estimates from Sacnilk, the film raked in Rs 31.47 crore on its opening day in India. This figure includes advance bookings up to 10 pm.

The movie saw an overall Tamil occupancy rate of 73.19 per cent on Thursday, with evening shows recording the highest at 78.36 per cent. In Chennai, theatres were packed, with an impressive 99 per cent occupancy for the film’s 731 shows. Similar success was noted in Pondicherry, where the film had 32 shows, and in Madurai, where it enjoyed 91 per cent occupancy across 188 shows. According to trade pundits, the pre-sales of the film have already brought in around Rs 62 crore globally.

GOAT’s first-day box office collection is trailing behind Prabhas’ Kalki 2898 AD, which grossed Rs 114 crore on its first day in India. The Telugu sci-fi epic is the highest grosser of 2024 so far. Furthermore, Vijay’s latest movie also fell short of his previous film Leo, which minted Rs 76.2 crore on its first day in India.

Directed by Venkat Prabhu and produced by AGS Entertainment, GOAT, featuring a star-studded cast including Prashanth, Prabhu Deva, Meenakshi Chaudhary, and Yogi Babu in pivotal roles, opened to mixed reviews. Indianexpress.com’s Avinash wrote in his review, “There is no doubt that GOAT is indeed a celebration of all things Vijay. His dancing, action sequences, comic timing, vulnerability, romantic charm, and effortless superstardom are all stuff of dreams. A dream that is slowly moving away from the audience. Probably why Venkat Prabhu does things that he might not have done if the film wasn’t weighed down by this added burden. We know we are in for the last phase of this journey with one of our greatest superstars, and even if the film falls quite a bit away from the target of being the greatest of all time, it’s okay, because now we are down to just one more.”
