A couple of weeks ago, a statement by National Film Award winner Rishab Shetty attracted controversy on social media. In a promotional interview for his upcoming production venture, Laughing Buddha, the actor claimed that Bollywood shows India in a ‘bad light’. Now, actor Nani has reacted to Shetty’s statement.

In a recent interview with India Today, Nani was asked about Rishab Shetty’s controversial remark. At first, the actor expressed shock, and said, “Did he really say that?” Later, the actor added, “I don’t think Bollywood is showing it (India) in negative way. I think what he means is much more rooted stories can be told.”

Sharing his own observation about Hindi film industry, the Hi Nana star said, “Somewhere, I feel there is a lot of importance given to technique and style of filmmaking (in Hindi cinema) than the emotional aspect of the story. I have felt this in a few films.” The actor clarified he wasn’t complaining, but just sharing his observation. He then said, “There are also some great magical cinema in Hindi.”

Talking about Rishab Shetty, the actor defended him and said, “I don’t think he meant it in that way.” He added, “I cannot really comment on this without knowing the context of his statement.”

Two weeks ago, in an interview with Metro Saga, the Kantara star was asked “You mostly make films on societal issues, which we often tend to ignore when we read or watch in news. Like your film Kantara talked about Man vs Wild in a way, but you make sure to show it in a very sensitive manner, how do you do it?” To this, Rishab replied, “I think this is the most important thing to consider.”

He added, “Cinema is a huge medium, and best way to show social issues and causes. But to make films around such subjects, there is a way. I have noticed, a lot of Indian films, especially the Bollywood, show India in a bad light. Calling it an art film, they go to several International Film Festivals and bag awards and walk the red carpet. But for me, I am proud of my country, state (Karnataka), and language (Kannada). Why should I shy away from promoting our culture in a positive note? Why should I refrain myself from showing the positiveness of our society in a positive manner? I make sure that nothing I show or tell hurts anybody’s sentiments, or shows our country in a bad light. I am extremely conscious about it.”

The actor-director-writer is the producer of Laughing Buddha. The film talks about the obesity in the police department. The actor recently bagged a National Award for his film Kantara (2022).

Nani, too had found himself in a soup after he commented on Arshad Warsi’s remark on Prabhas. After Arshad Warsi claimed Prabhas’ character in Kalki looked like a ‘Joker’ in one of his interviews, Nani during a promotional event for his film Saripodhaa Sanivaaram, said, “The person that you are referring to, this must be the most publicity he has got in his life.” Later, the actor apologised for his choice of words.
