Director Imtiaz Ali is seen as a maverick in the Indian film industry. While his last film Amar Singh Chamika received widespread acclaim, there have been some massive flops too in his career. In a recent conversation with Mid Day, Imtiaz Ali spoke about one of his films that did not do quite well — Sara Ali Khan and Kartik Aaryan’s Love Aaj Kal 2. During the conversation when Imtiaz was told how Sara Ali Khan said that she did not like herself in the film, the director explained what went wrong with the project.

He revealed how the young actors could not understand his vision, Imtiaz shared, “There was something very sensitive in Love Aaj Kal 2. My English teacher told me the film reminded her of her English classes when she would ask young students if they understood what she was saying and they said yes, even if they didn’t. She said the youngsters in the film didn’t get what you were trying to say. I am not blaming Sara and Kartik. Direction is a process of working with an actor, but he or she is not obliged to understand because they have surrendered.”

“I did not get it that I had to explain to them in different ways to get them to that point where they could own that material. The script could not communicate to me or the actors perhaps,” he added. When asked if he would call that his rough patch, Imtiaz said, “At all points, I am engaged with a certain challenge and I am only worried about that, at that point. I don’t feel I am in a rough patch, although some of my films have not done that well.” Imtiaz Ali’s last film Amar Singh Chamkila received great reviews. The filmmaker is yet to announce his next project.
