Popular content creator and actor Kusha Kapila is still reeling from the aftermath of a recent roast appearance. The comedian, who is set to star in the upcoming web series Life Hill Gayi, has been vocal about the impact of the ‘shockingly unkind’ jokes made at her expense, including personal digs about her body and divorce from Zorawar Singh Ahluwalia.

In a recent interview with Fever FM, Kapila delved deeper into the challenges faced by women in the public eye. “Unkinder to women, that society is anyway so I think that is something my mother had to go through. I completely shut myself to opinions or anything. I didn’t have the bandwidth for it. So I am sure my mother can speak very clearly about it.”

Kusha Kapila empathised with her mother, who endured similar societal pressures without the same platform to voice her experiences. “She (her mother) had to speak to relatives and speak to society. She has her own life… she goes to the temple or to the park. She has her own social communities where she had to face opinions and that is how the world works. This is the reality, this is the truth of where we live in and the times we live in. As much progress is happening and we hope for it to happen, some things pretty much remain the same,” she added.

The content creator turned actor also acknowledged the complexities of online life, stating, “The other aspect of it is that, you can’t pick and choose what is going to happen to you online, especially if you have opened up your world and life to a lot of people. You can alter how you share your life now, going forward, realising the consequences of sharing your private life with people but I don’t think you get to pick and choose. It is unkind, it is unfair, that is there, assumptions will be made, people will speak on behalf of you and then you are like, ‘What do I give explanation for? These are a range of topics.”

Kusha Kapila, who acted in Thank You for Coming, alongside Bhumi Pednekar, revealed that the roast went too far, claiming it “straight up dehumanised” her. Adding to the hurt, she was unaware of the cruel jokes beforehand. In a candid Instagram post, she shared a message about letting negativity slide, suggesting a coping mechanism in the face of such adversity.

She wrote, “When someone’s trying to disempower you, it’s their garbage. It’s not yours to store. Let it slide off you.” This came days after Kusha opened up about how she sat through comedian Ashish Solanki’s Pretty Good Roast Show, which was shot in January and released recently on YouTube.

Kusha Kapila was a target for several comedians on the show, including Samay Raina, whose jokes she described as “unkind”. Other panelists, Aaditya Kulshreshth, Shreya Priyam Roy, and Gurleen Pannu also contributed to the barrage of jokes directed at her.

Kusha and Zorawar dated for a few years before they got married in 2017. The parted ways last year.
