A fortnight after the release of the controversial lyrical video from the upcoming Ravi Teja-starrer Mr Bachchan, the movie’s makers have released its teaser, giving viewers a preview of what to expect from the film.

The 98-second teaser of Mr Bachchan starts off lighthearted, featuring a song from Premalayam (the Telugu-dubbed version of Hum Aapke Hai Koun) and shows Ravi Teja attempting to win over his love interest, Bhagyashri Borse. As the video progresses, it depicts the two of them sharing sensual romantic moments. However, the tone of the teaser shifts dramatically when the dialogue, “This country is not ailing with poverty, but due to black money,” is heard. The promo then depicts Ravi Teja, playing a righteous Income Tax officer, battling corruption and powerful figures. Despite facing personal challenges, he is shown to remain determined to fight against the odds.

“Success and failure are like visitors; they come and go. But attitude is like a surname; it stays with us until death,” Ravi Teja says in the teaser, which hints at a high-octane, masala film. Mr Bachchan is a remake of director Raj Kumar Gupta’s crime film Raid (2018), starring Ajay Devgn, Ileana D’Cruz and Saurabh Shukla in the lead roles.

After the release of the lyrical video for the song “Sitar” two weeks ago, a debate had erupted on social media over Ravi Teja’s certain dance moves, which many found objectionable. In the song and the film, a 56-year-old Ravi Teja is romantically paired with a 25-year-old Bhagyashri, which many viewers found troubling. The video features several shots of Ravi touching Bhagyashri’s derriere as part of the hook step and numerous other shots objectifying her. Many netizens found these disturbing, especially given that Ravi Teja is more than twice the age of Bhagyashri.

“56-year-old Ravi Teja’s sickening dance steps with the 25-year-old Bhagyashree Borse. And the filmmakers don’t even care to show the actress’ face here, because all they want is to objectify her,” one film-based account wrote on X (formerly Twitter). Meanwhile, another netizen noted, “When they don’t have content then go to these kind of cheap tricks. People must reject these kind of things.”

Helmed by Harish Shankar S, known for films such as Gaddalakonda Ganesh (2019), DJ: Duvvada Jagannadham (2017), Ramayya Vasthavayya (2013) and Gabbar Singh (2012), Mr Bachchan is produced jointly by TG Vishwa Prasad, Vivek Kuchibotla, Bhushan Kumar, Krishan Kumar, Abhishek Pathak and Kumar Mangat Pathak, under the banners of People Media Factory, T Series Films and Panorama Studios. The movie will hit the screens on August 15, 2024.
