While PS Vinothraj did create quite the stir with his award-winning debut film, Koozhangal, it didn’t hit the big screens because it had to settle for a direct-to-OTT release. However, things have changed for his sophomore film, Kottukkaali. Backed by Sivakarthikeyan’s SK Productions, Kottukkaali, starring Anna Ben in her Tamil debut and Soori, is set to be released on August 23.
Kottukkaali, which had its world premiere at the 74th Berlinale, is riding high on critical acclaim, and the hype surrounding the unique casting and a heavyweight production house being attached to the film. The film also follows the back-to-back theatrical success of Soori’s second coming as a hero. The actor, who regaled us with his comic timing, explored his versatility by playing the protagonist in Vetri Maaran’s acclaimed Viduthalai (2023), and followed it up with the rural family drama, Garudan. Both these films established Soori’s credentials as a marketable hero with credible box-office pull, and it would be interesting to see where Kottukkaali positions him on the ladder of success as a hero.

Meanwhile, it is a mad rush this August with an average of 3-4 films expected to be released every week. Even Kottukkaali will be clashing at the box-office with Mari Selvaraj’s Vaazhai. Considering how the first three weeks of August are choc-a-bloc with releases, it won’t be a surprise if we see a bit of shuffling of the dates, or a few more additions.
