It is usual for star birthdays to be peppered with updates of their upcoming releases. It is even more special when the said star is Suriya, who is riding a wave of positivity with the responses to his stellar line-up of films, including Siva’s Kanguva and Karthik Subbaraj’s Suriya 44.

Exactly 12 minutes after the clock struck 12, the makers of Suriya 44 released a special birthday wish video for the actor. The video, which begins with an ominous yet quirky music of Santhosh Narayanan, builds up the elevation for the actor with the words “A love, A laughter, and A War awaits for… THE ONE” displayed in red. We first see the birthday boy as a silhouette as he walks towards the camera as his faithful bunch of henchmen wait for him to reach the front of the group. With blood splattered on his face and neck, a menacing Suriya walks with a cigarette in his mouth, and a gun in his hand, and looks straight at us, and gives a lopsided wicked smile before firing a bullet.

After playing the Mr Goody Two Shoes for too long, Suriya is gradually embracing his dark side. While he did show those signs in NGK, it is through Vikram’s Rolex that he thoroughly stepped into the other side and Suriya 44 looks to be quite an impressive addition to the list. Of course, it is never what it seems in a Karthik Subbaraj padam, and it is fair game to expect him to pull the wool over our eyes when the film hits the screens next year.

For now, it is the perfect start to Suriya’s birthday, and if the hype on social media is anything to go by, all have hopped on to the Suriya 44 hype train.

The film, backed by Stone Bench Films and 2D Entertainment, also stars Pooja Hegde, Jayaram, Joju George, and Karunakaran. With music by Santhosh Narayanan and cinematography by Shreyaas Krishna, Suriya 44 has been shot in Andaman, and is expected to be filmed in places like Kerala, and Chennai.

Apart from Suriya 44, the actor also has Kanguva, directed by Siva, which is expected to hit the screens on October 10.
