Malaika Arora recently opened up about co-parenting her 21-year-old son Arhaan with her ex husband, actor and filmmaker Arbaaz Khan. The couple divorced in 2017 after a marriage of 19 years.
Malaika said she and Arbaaz have it all figured out now. She told Hello Magazine, “For whatever it’s worth, touch wood, we’ve found a great balance now. Perhaps initially it was a little tricky. And rightly so — because that’s just how life is. We both knew that irrespective of everything else and what may have transpired between two adults, it should never reflect on a child — and we have figured out a very congenial way of co-parenting.”

Malaika, a model, singer, dancer, reality show judge, also opened up about her parenting strategy where she wants her son to be her friend with whom he “can speak his mind.”
“I’ve said this before; I’d rather have Arhaan be my friend — where he can feel comfortable talking to me about anything. I would hate it if he felt he couldn’t come to me or had to think 10 times before speaking his mind, wondering whether his mum is going to completely flip out! I like the fact that he can come tell me anything if he wants — and that goes for my nieces and nephews too. I love feeling cool enough to hear them out, give them a point of view and yet, let them feel they’re making their own decisions without forcing my ideas or thoughts onto them,” she said.
Malaika then opened up on how she and Arbaaz have given it their all to make sure that Arhaan grew up with values and strives to be able to do something on his own soon. She said, “Most importantly, I wanted Arhaan to have respect for others and have a sense of being able to do things on his own without relying on the privileges he has. We’ve always told him that he needs to make it on his own, even though we’re always there for him to fall back on. To be independent in his thinking, financially and emotionally too… It’s very easy for privileged children to assume their parents will always take care of everything. No, you’ve got to do it on your own…”
Malaika Arora met and fell in love with actor Arbaaz Khan when she was in her early 20s. Soon after, the two got married in December 1998, but after 19 years of marriage, in May 2017, the couple parted ways. Malaika was then dating actor Arjun Kapoor and Arbaaz tied the knot recently with Sshura Khan. Malaika and Arbaaz continue to co-parent their son Arhaan.
