Nana Patekar, who recently made his comeback in films with Vivek Agnihotri’s The Vaccine War, is known for his exceptional acting in films like Parinda, Krantiveer, Tirangaa, Welcome, and Kaala, among others. Nana, who made his acting debut in Bollywood with the 1978 drama Gaman, recalled working with Vidhu Vinod Chopra for the 1989 film Parinda and said he has some “bad memories”. “Every time I meet Vidhu Vinod Chopra, I wish this was our last time”, said Nana in a recent interview.

In an interview with Lallantop, the veteran actor shared he doesn’t like Vidhu Vinod Chopra at all. He said, “I don’t like Vidhu Vinod Chopra. I have no control over my anger. I am still the same. That aspect of my life hasn’t changed yet. Every scene has its setting, tune, and note, there is a way to talk. Now, I don’t know if you watched Parinda, I was in the character, so when the director says, ‘Lights, camera, clap’, if you aggressively say ‘action’, it starts to linger in your ears. It echoes and hurts your ears.”

He added, “Let us be in our character please. What happens, when someone shouts, we forget the note that is required for the scene and unknowingly pick director’s note. Just say ‘action’ calmly. Let us get into our character and note. It is because of this we must have had a tiff. I have very bad memories of him (Vidhu Vinod Chopra) and even habits.”

Nana then shifted his angle from the interviewer to the camera and said, “Vidhu, please hear this. I want to tell you all this to your face and not behind your back.”

When asked about his last meeting with Vidhu Vinod Chopra, Nana quickly said, “Every time I meet him, I wish it to be the last meeting.” “No, seriously”, he added when his response made his audience in the interview laugh.

There is a very famous anecdote from the shooting of Parinda. It is said that during the film’s shoot, filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra had given strict instructions to the cast and crew to bring their own food on set. However, Nana Patekar was against this and demanded food on set. This led to an argument between the two, during which Patekar abused the director. Angered Vidhu Vinod Chopra tore Nana Patekar’s kurta on set.

Apart from Nana Patekar, Parinda also starred Jackie Shroff, Anil Kapoor, and Madhuri Dixit in the lead roles. The film received critical acclaim upon its release and was considered to be the turning point in the introduction of realism in Hindi cinema. Parinda won two National Film Awards. It was also selected for the 1990 Academy Award or Oscars for Best Foreign Language Film, but was not nominated.

On the work front, Nana Patekar will be seen in Anil Sharma’s directorial film Journey.
