Actor Manoj Bajpayee says he styled himself in the 1988 crime drama Satya, which was his breakthrough film where he played the now iconic character of gangster Bhiku Mhatre. Bajpayee, who shot to fame playing the Mumbai-based criminal, said he designed the look of the character from scratch– thinking what kind of clothes he would wear and of what fabric.

In an interview with Galatta India, Bajpayee revealed that for the Ram Gopal Varma movie, he was allocated a budget of Rs 25,000 to style his character. The actor recalled how he would search all the shops in Bandra’s Hill Road market as he wanted to design Bhiku Mhatre as authentically as possible.

“I was given Rs 25,000 to shop for my costumes. In those days, if you were not a big star you had to do it this way or the costume dada on set would do it for you, whatever the directors would tell them. They would somehow stitch clothes or choose clothes for you. But in Satya, I wanted to do it myself.

“I was of the opinion that I knew exactly what kind of clothes Bhiku Mahate would wear. So I used to come to Hill Road quite often, looking for the kind of fabric and prints that would reflect him. So all the shirts, denims and vests that you see, everything was shopped from here. I handpicked every single thing,” he said.

The actor, who rose to prominence post Satya, said he has styled himself in some of his initial films. Bajpayee said when a film comes to him, he starts thinking about truly building his character, and so, what clothes they wear becomes extremely important for him.

“I have done costumes for a few of my initial films; and I loved doing that. Now I have my costume people, the designers and they are always on tenterhooks with me. When I am working on my character, I am also thinking about the clothes he will wear. It is not just about the design but also fabric, the fitting. every character will have a different fitting. I would go to small shops and buy clothes in bulk. It was such a hard task looking for that kind of fabric.”

The actor is having an eventful year so far with two releases– ZEE5 thriller Silence 2: The Night Owl Bar Shootout co-starring Prachi Desai and the action drama Bhaiyya Ji, co-starring Zoya Hussain, which released theatrically last month.
