Diljit Dosanjh is one of the biggest stars in the country at the moment. He is ruling hearts on a global level too. Recently, the singer-actor announced that he would be featured on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon. While sharing the news he wrote, “Punjabi aa gaye oyee!” This wasn’t the first time Diljit said or wrote this line. He has proudly said the line on the global stage at Coachella and even at his Mumbai concert. While this particular line has led many of his fans to question why the Crew actor says Punjab and not India, Diljit seems to have finally answered the question.

During a podcast with Raj Shamani, Diljit Dosanjh was asked why he chose to so proudly represent Punjab and not India specifically on stages. The singer-actor said, “Punjab is a small part of India, and I come from a very small state where regional music is made. Earlier regional music was not that grand, but now it is global. So that feeling you have when you come from a small town is different. On India level, there are very big artistes. I cannot sing as well as Sonu Nigam. Regional music reached Coachella from India, which is why I have that vibe that I came from a small place to a big one today.”
Diljit added, “When I had gone to Coachella, a friend of mine had told me that ‘you are not realizing that it was the first time Punjabi was spoken on the world stage.’ That thought got ingrained in my mind and it automatically came out on stage, I didn’t say it consciously.”

During the interaction, Diljit Dosanjh also revealed how he struggles to make Hindi songs. In fact, his song “Naina” in Crew also came after some serious follow-up by producer Rhea Kapoor. “It’s not like I am singing Hindi songs and the whole of India is listening to me. I always spoke Punjabi, but due to Hindi films, I started talking in Hindi. I cannot make Hindi songs by myself, even ‘Naina’ in Crew happened because Rhea Kapoor made me do it, or else I cannot make Hindi songs. I told her I could not make songs for Bollywood, I didn’t know how to do it, but she pursued me for a year. That time I was working on an album and she would ask me every 10 days where was the song. It was she who made that song through me.”
Diljit Dosanjh is now gearing up for the release of his Punjabi film Jatt & Juliet 3. The movie also stars Neeru Bajwa and will be released on June 27.
