Despite hailing from the affluent Nanabhai Bhatt family and being the niece of filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt, producer Mukesh Bhatt, and screenwriter Robin Bhatt, Ssmilly Suri never managed to have a successful film career like her cousin Alia Bhatt or her brother, director Mohit Suri. Although she made her debut playing the lead role in Mohit’s blockbuster action thriller Kalyug, she did not land more roles afterwards and withdrew from cinema in 2012.
Even though she doesn’t share a deep bond with her cousin Alia Bhatt, Ssmilly only has the nicest things to say about the National Award-winning actor. Recently, Ssmilly took a trip down memory lane and recalled the time she gave Alia dance lessons.
“Alia is very sweet. I was her teacher when she was really small. She was barely four years old. I was 16, but was told to say 18. Once I reached their house, little Alia was there, along with two or three other little ones. I immediately said, ‘Okay, I am starting the class.’ Her parents were standing nearby. If I said, ‘stand on one foot,’ she would. She was that sweet and still is.” However, “maasi” Ssmilly is yet to meet Alia and Ranbir’s daughter Raha. “I have not met her. But she’s beautiful.”
Following her brief movie career, Ssmilly returned to the spotlight a few years later when she took on a key role in the historical drama serial Jodha Akbar. She also made an appearance in the celebrity dance reality series Nach Baliye’s seventh season in 2015 as a contestant with her then-husband Vineet Bangera. Besides Alia, Ssmilly is also the cousin of actor Emraan Hashmi, director-producer Pooja Bhatt, and influencer-author Shaheen Bhatt.
