Gautam Vasudev Menon, who claims to have learnt the art of filmmaking just by watching the films of his idol Mani Ratnam, recently revealed one of the awkward moments he shared with the ace filmmaker because of R Madhavan. “I hate Madhavan”, said Menon, recalling the incident where he botched up a narration.

On June 2, Ratnam turned 68. On the occasion, O2india shared a special video dedicated to the Ponniyin Selvan director which had Menon talk a few things about his “Guru”.

In the video, Gautam Menon recalled several incidents, and one of it was the time when Madhavan forced the Vaaranam Aayiram director to narrate the script of his debut film Minnale to Mani Ratnam.

Menon said, “I was made to go and narrate my first script Minnale to Mani sir by Madhavan. He said, ‘If Mani sir green lights the project, then this project is on.’ I hated Madhavan for that, for making me go through what I thought was going to be an ordeal. Here, I was someone in awe of that man (Mani Ratnam). How could I go narrate my story to him? I botched up the narration. However, somehow the film happened.”

In another interview, Gautam Vasudev Menon recalled that Mani Ratnam was unimpressed by the story of Minnale. However, Madhavan, who felt sorry for Menon, agreed to do the film with him. The movie, also starring Abbas and Reema Sen in pivotal roles, hit theaters in 2001.

The story revolved around a young man falling in love with the girl engaged to his ex-college rival. Minnale went on to become a commercially successful film.

The Tamil film was later remade in Hindi as Rehna Hai Tere Dil Mein, where Madhavan reprised his role, while Dia Mirza played the female lead. It was also remade in Kannada, ten years later, as Mr Duplicate.
