Following a successful theatrical run, director Vineeth Sreenivasan’s Varshangalkku Shesham finally made its OTT debut on Thursday and is now streaming on SonyLIV. The film, which features an extensive cast including Pranav Mohanlal, Dhyan Sreenivasan, Nivin Pauly, Aju Varghese, Basil Joseph, Neeraj Madhav, Shaan Rahman, Neeta Pillai, and Kalyani Priyadarshan, hit the theatres on April 11 alongside Jithu Madhavan’s Fahadh Faasil-starrer Aavesham and received mixed reviews.

However, did you know that the writer-director initially envisioned Varshangalkku Shesham with Malayalam superstar Mohanlal and Vineeth and Dhyan’s father Sreenivasan in mind? Yes, you heard it right! While developing the movie’s script, Vineeth intended to approach both veterans, known as one of the most iconic duos in Malayalam cinema, particularly famous for their roles as Dasan and Vijayan in Nadodikkattu (1987).

Because Varshangalkku Shesham’s story spans over 50 years, Vineeth intended for Pranav and Dhyan to play only the younger versions of their characters — Murali Vishwambaran and Venu Koothuparambu, respectively. For the later years of the characters, he wanted their fathers, Mohanlal and Sreenivasan, respectively, to take over the roles.

“If you look at the dialogues in the latter part of Varshangalkku Shesham, there are several exchanges where one character teases the other. It would have been great if Lal uncle and my dad could have done it,” Vineeth said in an interview with On The Dot Media.

“However, before I could approach them with this project, my father’s health started to decline. Filming in a hilly area like Munnar or shooting for several consecutive days was not feasible. So, I didn’t pursue that idea further. Nevertheless, I wrote the script with them in mind and didn’t change the dialogues afterwards because they felt authentic,” he added.

In his review of the movie, The Indian Express’ Anandu Suresh wrote, “The major disappointment in Vineeth Sreenivasan’s Dhyan Sreenivasan and Pranav Mohanlal-starrer lies in the fact that, despite the ensemble cast, it’s only Nivin Pauly, in an extended cameo, who delivers a standout performance.”
