On music maestro Ilaiyaraaja’s birthday, on Sunday, actors Kamal Haasan and Dhanush sent heartfelt wishes to the legendary composer through social media. Ilaiyaraaja is marking his 81st birthday today.

Dhanush took to X (formerly Twitter) to share a poster from his upcoming film — Ilaiyaraaja — a biopic on the composer. In the poster, the actor, who portrays the role of the music legend, stands on stage before a vast audience, one hand resting on a harmonium, with numerous musicians seated behind him. The poster reads, “Happy Birthday, maestro.” Dhanush simply captioned it, “Happy birthday to the one and only @ilaiyaraaja sir.”

Kamal Haasan, on the other hand, took the opportunity to send his wishes to both Ilaiyaraaja and Mani Ratnam, who share the same birthday. On X, he posted photos with the composer and the filmmaker along with a heartfelt message. He wrote, “Double happiness is a strange phrase in Tamil. Can happiness be measured? But today is like an example for me. This is a happy moment as today is the birthday of the elder brother among the three brothers and the birthday of the younger brother.”

He added, “My beloved brother Ilayaraja will tell the story in music; anbu thambi (dear younger brother) Mani Ratnam who adds a touch of charm to screenwriting… I wish you both a happy birthday. May the legacy of our trio continue forever,” along with the hashtags — Happy Birthday Ilaiyaraaja and Happy Birthday Mani Ratnam.

Dhanush is gearing up to embody Ilaiyaraaja in the forthcoming biopic, which was officially announced in Chennai recently in the presence of Kamal Haasan and filmmaker Vetri Maaran. Directed by Arun Matheswaran and filmed by Nirav Shah, the biopic’s music will be composed by Ilaiyaraaja himself. He also shared the first-look poster on X, captioning it, “Honoured @ilaiyaraaja sir (sic).” The biopic will be produced by Connekkt Media, PK Prime Production, and Mercuri Movies.
