Actor Manoj Bajpayee, who gained further prominence after starring in Anurag Kashyap‘s two-part gangster epic Gangs of Wasseypur, said that he doesn’t meet with the filmmaker all that often anymore. He described Anurag as a ‘loner’ and said that the filmmaker is ‘detached’. Manoj and Anurag first worked together on the film Satya, in which he played the character Bhiku Mhatre and for which Anurag co-wrote the script.

In an interview with Sushant Sinha on YouTube, Manoj said that it’s rare to strike genuine friendships in the film industry. Asked about Anurag, Manoj said, “He’s a detached person; he’s a loner. Actually, he’s my junior by several years, but because he’s a wise man – he reads a lot – I have learned a lot from him. But he’s a recluse; he enjoys his own company and doesn’t meet too many people. He’s the kind of person who can speak to you for two hours, but in the third hour start hating you.” Manoj added with a laugh, “And that’s why I don’t meet him.”

Manoj had a falling out with the filmmaker, which ended when he was offered Gangs of Wasseypur. He told Humans of Bombay in an interview, “I got a call around 10:30 pm, that was the time I was about to retire for the day. It was a call from Anurag Kashyap, who I had not spoken to for many years. We had some conflict issues which had not been sorted out, but that one call kind of demolished all the issues.”

In the past, Manoj has also spoken about filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma’s decline from prominence, after having made some of Hindi cinema’s most seminal films. He told Ranveer Allahbadia, “Woh apni dhoon mein chalne wale aadmi hai (he has his own way of doing things), he has his own philosophy and walks on his own principles. He is a very well educated man, his philosophy about modern relationships and modern world is amazing. I listen to him even if I disagree with him, I love listening to what he has to say,” he said.
