Actor, entrepreneur and owner of IPL team Punjab Kings, Preity Zinta, made her comeback at the Cannes Film Festival this year after a gap of 17 years. Preity is at the 77th Cannes Film Festival to present the Pierre Angénieux ExcelLens in Cinematography award to Santosh Sivan. The last time she was at the festival was in 2007.

Preity walked the Cannes red carpet in a pink “understated” saree with a sparkle designed by fashion designer Seema Gujral. She completed her look with minimal jewellery.

Preity had also taken to her personal social media handle to share pictures of herself arriving at Cannes.

When asked how she’s feeling being in Cannes, Preity, in an interview with Brut said, “It’s wonderful, I am coming after a long time so I am very excited. Happy to be here.” About her look of the day, she said, “My look is simple with a little bit of sparkle, understated.”

However, as soon as the clips of her interview surfaced on social media, netizens started questioning her accent. While some people criticised her accent and wrote, “Whatever happened to her accent jeez.” There were others who defended her and commented in her support as one person wrote, “She is just gorgeous 💫🥰🤌🤍, ignore all who are noticing her accent.” Yet another person wrote, “She has literally lived in the US for over a decade, of course, the accent is going to be influenced. This isn’t fake at all.”

Earlier actor Kiara Advani, who made her Cannes debut this year, was also criticised for her accent. Talking at the film festival, Kiara said, “It is going to be a decade in my career now. I think this comes at a very special moment as well. And I am truly so humbled to be here at Cannes for the first time and being honored by the Red Sea Film Foundation. It is such a humbling experience.” However, a bunch of netizens criticised her accent. One of them wrote, “I was rooting for her, why did she do that? I like how Alia and Deepika never fake their accents on such occasions.” Another wrote, ” Disappointed.”
