Before they bounced back in blockbuster fashion with Gadar 2 and Animal, sibling actors Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol worked on the film Poster Boys during an extended low phase in their respective careers. Actor Shreyas Talpade, who also directed the film, recalled approaching Sunny and Bobby with the project, and what their mind space was like during that difficult time. In an interview, he admitted that Bobby wasn’t in the best state, and that he’d heard unflattering stories about Sunny.

He told Siddharth Kannan, “Yes, that was a time when Bobby, especially, was at an all-time low. He hadn’t worked for four years. And I remember when I first went to meet him for a narration, we just chit-chatted, because he wasn’t in that frame of mind… He was very low. ‘Maine kaam nahi kiya, mujhe confidence nahi hai, kya karun (I haven’t worked in a while, I don’t have the confidence, I don’t know what to do),’ he said. So, we didn’t do the narration. Next day, I went again, and got through the first half. And then I returned the day after that and finished the second half.”

After that, Shreyas said, he saw a ‘visible change in Bobby’. He called him for a reading session at 11, and promised him that it would be just the two of them. Bobby showed up exactly on time, and to Shreyas’ surprise, had shaved off his scraggly beard. “I said, ‘Now I see my Bobby Deol!’,” Shreyas recalled, adding that both brothers were very ‘sincere’ throughout the filming process. About Sunny, he said, “We’d heard stories about Sunny paaji, that the schedules would go on forever, but it was nothing like that. We finished the film in 30 days. His work was for 26 days. We had a 7 am shift, he’d show up at 6:30, get ready in five minutes, and we’d be shooting on time.”

Gadar 2, a sequel to the 2001 hit, was released in August 2023, and grossed nearly Rs 700 crore worldwide. It signalled Sunny’s return to prominence after several years, and the entire industry showed up to celebrate alongside him at a post-release party. Bobby played the scene-stealing mute antagonist in Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Animal, which was an even bigger hit in December, grossing over Rs 900 crore worldwide. Both brothers are now well and truly back, having signed high-profile projects.
