Dressed in an elaborate, meticulously hand-crafted Sabyasachi Mukherjee saree, Alia Bhatt looked regal and managed to make turn heads at Met Gala 2024. Keeping up with the theme, Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion with the dress code, The Garden of Time, Alia’s saree, which took 1965 man hours and required 163 kaarigars to work on the craft, was a perfect ode to the timeless saree. In a recent behind the scene video shared by Vogue magazine, Alia is seen prepping for the fashion’s biggest night at her hotel room as Sabyasachi and celebrity stylist, Anaita Shroff Adajania and the teams of hair and makeup artists work on her look.

“When it comes to an outfit, there’s nothing more endless or timeless like a saree,” Alia is heard saying. And while Alia looked graceful and sophisticated at Met Gala and graced the white and green carpet with poise, she recalled the fiasco when she wore a saree for the first time. “I remember I wore the saree for the first time when I was in the 9th grade. It was for a Teacher’s Day celebration in school. By the time I I reached school, my saree pleats opened. I rushed to the bathroom to fix it. The attendants asked me, ‘Kya hua, baby?’ I quickly put my undone pleats back,” she recalled.

Alia also spoke about the planning that is required for an appearance like this. “I discovered that I can be a wedding planner because I love planning. I love plans!” she exclaimed. In the BTS video, Sabyasachi revealed that Alia was completely involved in the process of creating the outfit and achieving the look as she brought her own references for the outfit. He even joked, “She designed her own outfit.”

Alia garnered a lot of attention with her elegance, becoming the most visible attendee at the Met Gala (according to Lefty), says while she is aware that there could be hits and misses despite all the efforts, she hoped that she managed to make an impact with flying colours. “There is a story behind the garment. You want everything to come together and everything to land perfectly as a lot of effort is put into the story of the garment and the look. There are hits and misses and everybody wants a hit,” she concluded.
