The makers of Kalki 2898 AD recently announced the release date of the much-anticipated film and also shared a new poster featuring Prabhas, Deepika Padukone, and Amitabh Bachchan. Shortly after the release of the poster, netizens started comparing Deepika’s look to Zendaya’s in the film Dune. Now, director Nag Ashwin has responded to criticism about the film being too similar to Dune.

At the VFX Summit in Hyderabad, an attendee asked the filmmaker, “Project K looks a lot like the Hollywood movie Dune.” Nag replied, “It’s because of the sand. They (another student) noticed the film has sand in it, no? Basically, whenever there’s sand, it’ll look like Dune.”

Previously, at the Synapse 2024 event in Gurgaon, Nag Ashwin had said, “The film starts with Mahabharat and ends in 2898 AD. It spans 6000 years in time. We tried to create worlds, imagining what they would be like while still keeping it Indian and not making it look like Blade Runner.”

The filmmaker also said that he hasn’t used OpenAI’s Soras. The director said, “We had to build so many sets, designs, vehicles for this film. It was a lot of process to ideate, conceptualise, build it, prototype, machinery, ageing. Had I used Sora, I wouldn’t need to do this.”
