The much-awaited Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra-starrer Amar Singh Chamkila finally premiered on Netflix on Friday. Directed by Imtiaz Ali, the film immerses viewers in Punjab’s golden musical era, when the iconic Dalit singer, Amar Singh Chamkila, dominated the states’ music landscape between 1979 to 1988. His songs served as powerful social commentary, shedding light on Punjab’s harsh realities such as drug abuse, alcoholism, illicit affairs, and dowry.

Following its release, the makers unveiled a powerful clip from the film depicting a journalist confronting Chamkila (played by Diljit) for his sexist songs that objectify women. The scene begins with Chamkila avoiding eye contact with a female journalist because of her western attire. After learning about Chamkila’s discomfort, the journalist calls out his hypocrisy, highlighting how his songs portray women in a derogatory manner.

Chamkila, however, defends himself and his songs and says, “I have only seen all this and heard all of these things growing up. Not everyone can afford to think right and wrong. Some people just have to survive. I am a very ordinary man. I have to make the songs that people will like otherwise my career will be over.” Defending his status of the highest selling singer of Punjab, Chamkila said, “Most people in this world are ordinary like me and ordinary people have seen the same things that I have and that’s why they like my songs.”

This profound scene from the film conveys the depth and sincerity of Diljit Dosanjh’s performance in the film. The singer-actor has already garnered rave reviews for his portrayal. Shubhra Gupta from Indian Express praised Diljit’s performance, stating, “There’s no one quite like Diljit Dosanjh, who brings a shining sincerity and authenticity to the role of Chamkila, whose songs and records still have a bestseller status in not just Punjab, but in other pockets which both understand and appreciate the very specific triangulation between the singer and his song, and the time-and-place he came from.”
