Despite making the much-loved film Devdas, Shah Rukh Khan and Sanjay Leela Bhansali never collaborated with each other after this film. Bhansali is known to be a perfectionist on set and in a recent interview, actor Tiku Talsania shared that Shah Rukh was actively involved in the shooting process of the film. Tiku shared that Shah Rukh would come in with his own shot breakdown and discuss it with Bhansali before they started shooting. Tiku played the role of Dharamdas in the film.

In a chat with Digital Commentary, Tiku spoke about Shah Rukh and said, “He is a genius, he works hard, very hard on his character.” Tiku then recalled, “Those days, Shah Rukh had a laptop called Takara and it was an expensive laptop. He and Bhansali saab used to sit and discuss… Shah Rukh came in with his shot division and Bhansali came in with his. They used to sit down and discuss and then they would shoot.” Tiku said that the level of involvement that Shah Rukh had in the film was “very fascinating.”

Bhansali had previously hinted that his initial journey with Devdas started with Ajay Devgn as it was after working with him in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam that he moved on to Devdas. In an earlier chat with IANS, Bhanslai had said, “Ajay’s character was my starting point to make Devdas. I slowly moved towards this film from there. But having gone through the process with Ajay, there was no challenge or excitement in casting him again in a similar role. It would have been a process of continuation instead of creation. With Shah Rukh, it was a completely new experience. I wanted my Devdas to be a simple, volatile, boy-man, who is angry and mean and yet has a sad streak that shimmers in his eyes.”

Shah Rukh Khan, however, once said that it was “very stupid” of him to do Devdas as he was stepping into the shoes of Dilip Kumar who had famously played the role in the 1955 film. “I was a fool to say I will do Devdas. I feel I shouldn’t have done it. I have a deep regard for the fact that my parents loved Devdas. I was young and it was very stupid of me to do it. But I had the blessings of Dilip Sahib,” he was quoted by PTI during the launch of the book The Dialogue of Devdas.

The film also starred Aishwarya Rai, Madhuri Dixit and Jackie Shroff in pivotal roles.
