Amidst the recent success of Prithviraj Sukumaran’s survival drama Aadujeevitham (The Goat Life) and the praise that Malayalam films have been receiving for quite some time now, the conversation around Malayalam stars taking on niche roles where they are not playing larger-than-life characters or appearing heroic has become profound. Telugu star Vijay Deverakonda, who is currently promoting his upcoming film Family Star, recently said he is in awe of Malayalam films and the way the characters are portrayed in them.

In a conversation with Galatta Plus, the Arjun Reddy actor said,  “I am looking forward to watching Manjummel Boys and Premalu. I recently saw the trailer of one of Fahadh Faasil’s films which I loved. It is so well done. They’re technically very sound. Be it the music or the look of the poster, everything from start to finish is top-notch.”

He said while he wouldn’t mind doing a film like the 2015 romantic Premam, which had Nivin Pauly, Sai Pallavi and Anupama Parameshwaran in lead roles, he, however, consciously stays away from scripts or roles that are too niche for his audience. “When I select a script, it can’t be niche. My films take a lot of time and usually are made in a span of one year to one-and-a-half years. Family Star is the only film which was completed within nine months. So if I come up with a niche film, my audience, who has been eagerly waiting for my film to release, will be disappointed,” shared Vijay, adding that he gravitates towards character-driven films.

The actor, who enjoys watching different kinds of cinema said he likes to do films where the characters are central and not the events occurring in them. “They have to have a hint of narcissism in them,” said Vijay, adding, “I am in that age group where young people connect with me as well as the older age group who come to see my films with their kids. I need to entertain all of them. I know I am restricting myself but I won’t make choices that are either too dark or too niche. I heard a bunch of scripts that were too dark.”
