There is no expiry date for judgements. Shriya Saran says she has been at the receiving end of judgmental stares, which come loaded with assumptions about what it means to be a female actor working in the film industry.

Shriya, who has worked across industries since her debut in 2001, tells Indianexpress.com that she feels the questionable gaze on her even today, despite being married and having a baby.

When asked if she has experienced people assuming female actors in the industry to be frivolous, she said it happens “all the time”. The actor added, “I feel it too. That’s why I like my old friends, I go back and spend quality time with them.

“Andrei (husband) is like, ‘Oh you are thinking too much, nobody is thinking like that.’ But you see it, feel it, it happens. Even till now it happens, I am a mother. With Andrei I will be walking in and see people with the (judgmental) stare. It is weird.”

Shriya Saran, however, said the judgements have never “messed” with her as she operates from a space of simply not “caring” about opinions. “I will wear what I want do, do what I feel like. I know I am a good person and I always think the best for them. But what they perceive the industry to be, how they look at us, is their problem not ours.”

Shriya Saran is currently awaiting the release of her next series Showtime, which aims to give a glimpse of the behind the scenes workings of the film industry, with lies, deceit, power and stardom.

It is a show which Shriya said she enjoyed being a part of as she recalled some of the lies she has herself used as an actor to get away from tricky situations. “I have lied a lot. If I was dating someone, I have said, ‘Oh he’s just a friend’ to the media. I have never accepted anybody I am dating. I have also said I loved the film when I know for a fact that I am never going to watch it. I have done that as well, I know, horrible.

“Sometimes, people have lied as well. It was an early morning flight, I walk out of my car to the gate, and I see photographers there. I started laughing! I asked, ‘Kaun hai andar airport mein?’ Because I didn’t call the paps! They were like, ‘No no we are here for you!’ I am like, ‘Jhoot mat bolo, kyuki maine nahi bulaya!’ Then I go inside and see that the airport was full of lots of celebrities,” she added.

The Disney Plus Hotstar series is created and written by Sumit Roy with Mihir Desai attached as a showrunner. Directed by Mihir and Archit Kumar and backed by Karan Johar, the show also stars Emraan Hashmi, Rajeev Khandelwal, Mouni Roy, Naseeruddin Shah and Mahima Makwana in key roles. It will premiere on March 8.
