Nargis and Sunil Dutt’s love story is extraordinary, much like the films they made, and one that is remembered in the annals of Hindi cinema. Their daughter Priya Dutt on Wednesday gave everyone a peek into the star couple’s love story and life. In an Instagram post shared on Valentine’s Day, Priya, sister of Sanjay Dutt, didn’t only pay a tribute to her parents, her thoughts are also a window into a love story that shaped her life.
Sharing a “story of devotion, destiny and love,” she described how the enduring bond between her parents wasn’t merely a tale, but the “very essence of who they were” to her. “As a little girl,” Priya wrote, “peeping into the world of love was through the extraordinary connection shared by my parents. Their love wasn’t just a story; it was the very essence of who they were to me. Their story felt like it was taken out from the pages of a fairy tale, where a small-town boy was enchanted by the charm of a movie star; a match unforeseen yet destined by fate.”
Even today, their love story resonates with everyone who hears it. “It speaks of my father’s devotion, especially in my mother’s lowest moments and her illness,” the former member of the Parliament continued. “They respected each other through every trial and turbulence of their lives. They loved fiercely and lived wholeheartedly, embracing each other’s flaws and strengths.”
In Kishwer Desai’s biography, Darlingji: The True Love Story of Nargis and Sunil Dutt, she paints a picture of Nargis in 1957 as deeply distraught. Juggling a failing relationship with Raj Kapoor and a seemingly unsupportive family, Kishwer suggests Nargis contemplated suicide. This internal struggle reached a peak when the fire accident occurred on the sets of Mother India.
While the popular narrative focuses on Sunil’s heroic act of saving Nargis from the flames, Kishwer, in her book, writes that while Sunil sustained severe injuries, Nargis’s act of caring for him served as a catalyst for a deeper connection. Sharing the intimate details of her life during this vulnerable time, Nargis reportedly found solace and eventually, love in Sunil.
More than just lovers, Sunil and Nargis were “confidants, allies, and companions,” wrote the chairperson/trustee of Nargis Dutt Foundation, stressing that they taught her that “love goes beyond mere romance; it’s a friendship, a bond that endures”. This enduring bond, she believes, continues to exist even after their passing. “Despite their differences, their love flourished,” she wrote. “It’s from witnessing their love that I’ve come to understand the phenomenon in its purest form; imbued with sincerity, commitment, and dedication,” the post read.
