One of the most anticipated Malayalam movies of 2024, Rahul Sadasivan’s Mammootty-starrer Bramayugam, is ready for release on February 15. A horror thriller set in the “dark age of madness,” the film’s trailer, released on Saturday, had taken the internet by storm with its stunning visuals and Mammootty’s compelling portrayal as an elderly feudal lord who has a knack for dark magic.

Meanwhile, during the trailer launch event in Abu Dhabi, Mammootty made a rather surprising request to fans and moviegoers, urging them to approach the film with an open mind, avoiding assumptions or conclusions drawn from the trailer. “I have a request to all of you who are planning to watch the movie. While the trailer may have sparked various ideas, I urge you not to jump to conclusions about the story. I am saying this so that you are not disappointed [that the original narrative is different from your assumptions]. Watch the film without preconceived notions and refrain from anticipating the emotions it is going to elicit in you, as it can affect your viewing experience when the predictions come true.”

“This will be a fresh experience for Malayalam’s new generation because they are about to witness many things, which they usually enjoy in colour, in black and white in this movie,” he added.

Speaking on the occasion, Mammootty also said that though many suggested organising the trailer launch event in Kerala, he and the film’s team wished to conduct it in the UAE as, he said, “It boasts a large population that celebrates Malayalam cinema. It is just like Kerala, is another Kerala or can even be called an extension of Kerala.”

Mammootty also mentioned that Bramayugam is “set in the late 18th century when the Portuguese arrived in Kerala, India”. “Their arrival affected our country’s socio-political landscape and this too has a role in the film,” he concluded.

Mammootty’s comments about the film’s content and his request to viewers gain significance given the recent disappointment of Lijo Jose Pellissery’s Mohanlal-starrer Malaikottai Vaaliban. It may be recalled that several rumours about the film, including a comment by director Tinu Pappachan who worked as an AD to Lijo, were cited as the reasons behind the heavy expectations for the movie. Tinu had, during an interview, claimed that “Mohanlal’s intro scene in Vaaliban would make theatres tremble,” hinting that the movie would be a mass entertainer. However, Malaikottai Vaaliban, in essence, was far from that, which many claimed affected the movie experience.

During a chat with Galatta Plus, director Lijo observed that they might have made a mistake in the way the trailer was tailored, which did not effectively communicate the movie’s tone and pace. “(If given another chance) we would have provided the audiences with a broader trailer that would explain the pace of the film.”

Also starring Arjun Ashokan, Sidharth Bharathan, Amalda Liz, and Manikandan R Achari in key roles, Bramayugam is jointly produced by Night Shift Studios and YNOT Studios, and its dialogues co-authored, along with director Rahul, by Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award-winning novelist TD Ramakrishnan.
